Free Scan Return lets you return gear by scanning barcodes, without first opening a specific order. It now works for unserialized assets — the bulk-tracked products you count by quantity rather than by individual serial number. This article covers how to return unserialized assets two ways: directly from the Free Scan Return screen, and while you're restoring a container.
Return Unserialized Assets from Free Scan Return
Open the Free Scan Return screen. If your account uses multiple warehouses, select a warehouse first — the scan input stays disabled until you do, and the dialog will show orders and in-stock for that warehouse.
Scan the unserialized product's barcode in the scan input.
The Return Unserialized Items dialog opens, listing every shipped order that has this product packed. Each row shows:
Packed Qty — how many units that order currently has packed
Event and Order — so you can tell concurrent orders apart
Status — the order's current pack status
Date Leave and Date Return
Return Qty — where you enter how many units to return from that order
Enter a quantity in the Return Qty field on one or more orders. You can return from several orders in a single action.
Click Submit.
Each returned item is recorded in the success log and you'll hear the success sound, just like a serialized return. The packed quantity on each order drops by the amount you returned.
To close the dialog without returning anything, click Cancel.
Tip: Return Qty is capped at each order's Packed Qty, so you can't return more than was packed.
Return Unserialized Assets While Restoring a Container
When you're restoring a container, you can have LASSO prompt you to return unserialized units off their orders instead of silently pulling them from in-service stock. This is an opt-in setting.
Scan a container barcode to open the Repacking dialog.
In the dialog footer, turn on Return unserialized assets when restoring. (Its description reads: "When enabled, scanning a product code opens a return dialog instead of packing from stock automatically.")
Scan an unserialized product code. Instead of packing straight from stock, the Return Unserialized Items dialog opens — this time with the shipped-order rows plus an In Stock row.
Enter quantities on the order rows, the In Stock row, or both, then click Submit. LASSO returns the units from their orders and packs the combined quantity into the container in one step.
After you submit, focus returns automatically to the barcode input so you can keep scanning, and the restore table refreshes without losing your place.
The Return unserialized assets when restoring setting is persistent — it stays on across sessions until you turn it off. When it's off, scanning during a container restore behaves exactly as before, packing from stock automatically. The setting only appears during a Free Scan container restore; it's hidden when you open the Repacking dialog from a Pull Sheet.
The In Stock Row
The In Stock row represents units already in your in-service stock — gear that's on the shelf rather than out on an order. It shows how many units are available (for example, 5 available). Use it to pack from stock, return from one or more orders, or do both at once during a single restore.
Container Capacity & Allow Overpacking
By default, the combined quantity you can enter is capped at how much the container still needs — LASSO won't let you pack past the container's required quantity. If you turn on Allow Overpacking ("Pack more items than the container's required quantity"), that cap is lifted and you can pack as many units as you like.
If the container is already full, you'll see "The container is full — no additional units could be packed," and nothing is packed.
Multi-Warehouse
When you return as part of a container restore, in-stock counts and packing always target the container's warehouse — not the warehouse selected on the Free Scan panel — so units come from and go back to the right place.
Common Error Messages or Behaviors You May See:
"No shipped orders found for this product." — This product isn't packed on any shipped order, so there's nothing to return. Double-check that you scanned the right barcode and that the gear is actually out on an order.
A quantity snaps down when you submit — Return Qty is limited to what was packed on that order; an over-entry is corrected to the available amount.
"The container is full…" — The container has reached its required quantity. Turn on Allow Overpacking if you intend to pack beyond it.
